Can you believe it? The Wildcats are State Champs! Our girls' track team scored 59 points to with the 2017 IHSA State Track and Field Championship. The team won the IHSA Sectional the previous week and qualified 2 relays and 10 individual events to the State meet. After the prelims, the team still had 1 relay and 8 individual events in the competition. The girls came to compete on Saturday. In the first event, the 400m relay, anchor Kayla Armstrong pulled the team from a group of competitors about 15m behind first place to take first in a stirring come from behind victory. Armstong then followed that up with a 2nd place finish in the 100m dash and teammate Jada Williams (battling a sore hamstring) stayed close and finished 8th. Natasha Bernett then took 5th in the 100m high hurdles with a new PR and minutes later, jumped a new PR in the triple jump landing in 5th place again. Armstrong took to the blocks in the 400m, laid back in the pack, and came off the last turn with a burst of energy to overtake the leader to win the event in a new PR time. In the very next event, Bernett willed herself to a first place finish in the 300m hurdles with a charge over the last hurdle and a great finish lean. To top off the day, Armstrong and Williams both placed in the 200m dash, taking 4th and 7th to score valuable points. After some nervous and anxious waiting, the team scores were announced with the Wildcats on top of the competition in first place. With the closing of our school, this was an unbelievable and emotional finish. Congratulations to all of our girls and coaches for a great, great accomplishment! Go Cats!
