The Newark boys track team Compete at Seneca Sectional
The Newark boys track team competed at the Seneca Sectional meet last Friday. The tiny Newark team placed 13th out of 25 teams which had some powerhouse schools in it. Even with stiff competition, the boys performed well. The 4 x 400 relay team consisting of Jacob Chapman, Steve Martin, Beau Brown and Connor Swanson just missed placing by two tents of a seconds but did manage to break their own school record by two seconds with a time of 3:44.83 seconds.
Connor Swanson had a big night by placing second in the long jump and breaking the school record with a leap of state qualifying distance of 21’4.25”. He also bettered his own school record in the 300 hurdles by two seconds with a time of 40.103 seconds. This gave him second place and another qualifying event at the state meet which will be this Thursday at Eastern Illinois.
Dr. Schutt is very excited about the effort that the majority of the team displayed this year and is looking forward to getting even better by next year. There is a lot of young and raw talent that still needs to be developed and if the work ethic is there over the summer, it will pay off in all sports for next year.
