Game Summary

DGS: 9th place

Captain Hiquiana Shines, Wins 4 of 5 Matches in NaperValley Tourney

The varsity boys tennis team competed against top competition in the NaperValley 16 Team Tournament this past Friday and Saturday earning 9th place.  While 9th place is not a highlight finish for the Mustangs, only a handful of points separated DGS from a top 5 finish while teams 10-16 were all far below the Mustangs; it was clearly a 9 horse race.  All 8 of the varsity Mustang players experienced true adversity being pushed to their limits in close match after close match as 11 tiebreakers were played over the 2 days either to determine the set or the match.  At this high level of competition, only a handful of points decide a match as the Mustangs were only victorious in 3 of 11 tiebreakers over the 2 days.  With this young of a team, the Mustang coaching staff does not see this necessarily as a bad thing, but a valuable experience for all of the Mustang players to experience pressure situation after pressure situation hopefully paying dividends as the Mustangs enter the late stages of the season with Conference, Sectionals, and the state series in the coming 3 weeks.  The star of the weekend was senior captain Lawrence Hiquiana who won 4 of 5 matches over the course of the two days earning Consolation Champion and 5th place.  Hiquiana was also the first Mustang to eclipse the 25 win mark on the season.  In the last matches of the weekend, Hiquiana showed grit and experience with his young teammates watching as he pulled off 2 highlight tiebreaker victories over Hinsdale South and Naperville North to cap off his weekend.  The Mustangs get back to work in preparation for the Conference Tournament this Friday and Saturday with a home varsity match against Stagg High School.  Come out and support your Mustangs as they close in on the end of their season.  It was a GREAT weekend to be a Mustang!
