Tennis Battles Top Competition

This weekend at the Benet/DGS 8 Team Tournament the Mustangs faced some of the top teams in the state in a stacked tournament field.  The Mustangs were the 7 seed in the field and drew state title contender, Hinsdale Central, in the first round.  DGS competed hard and pushed the Red Devils, but lost to Hinsdale Central.  Top performances were Lawrence Hiquiana (Sr) in a grinding singles loss to top HC singles player Zach Elliot and the doubles team of Eric Herstowski (Jr) and Tanuj Singh (Fr) who won the first set but lost in a tiebreaker to the Red Devils.  In the second round, DGS lost a nail biter decision to Naperville North 2-3.  The 2 matches of the day came from this match.  Mitch Ludewig (So) grinded and broke down Naperville North's 2nd singles player in a great 7-5, 6-2 victory.  In the most exciting match of the day, DGS superstar Hiquiana flipped back into doubles play where his 2-time all state performance led the Mustangs with up and coming Matt Garcia (So) to a tiebreaker win over Naperville North's top doubles team.  In the last match of the day, the Mustangs blanked Moline with a 5-0 victory.  Everything came together in this match and the Mustangs took no point for granted making quick work of the Maroons to finish the day on a high note.  The Mustangs have a busy week ahead of them as they face DGN in the crosstown classic on Monday and open up conference play with matches against Willowbrook and Morton on Tuesday and Thursday.  Go Mustangs!
