The DGS varsity boy's tennis team opened their season this past weekend with the Five Star Tennis Invite. The Mustangs entered 2 singles players and 3 doubles teams into the tournament. All Mustangs came to play as every player won at least 1 match on the day. The best results on the day came in the doubles where two of 3 teams were flight champions. In flight C, Nolan Orth (Jr) and Nick Raso (Jr) won two matches after getting a first round bye to earn a Flight C championship. The final showed a peak performance in a 6-4 7-5 victory over a tough Batavia opponent. Other flight champions were Eric Herstowski (Jr) and Tanuj Singh (Fr) in flight D where they dominated the draw with no set getting closer than 6-4 on the day. In flight B doubles, Matt Garcia (So) and Jon Maghirang (Jr) placed 4th with a first round win followed by two tough losses. On the singles side, Lawrence Hiquiana (Sr) held down the top singles spot in Flight A where he drew two top performers from Naperville Central and Benet. Hiquiana played both close in tough losses. He finished his last match of the day with a victory over Batavia ending the day on a positive note. Lastly, JJ Urgello (Sr) battled in B flight singles with a tight loss to Oswego first round and a comeback victory over Benet in the 3rd place match. The Mustangs continue their pre-season matches as they head to Edwardsville this week for a long week of practices, 2 dual matches, and a 32 team tournament this weekend on March 31st and April 1st. It was a great start to the year for the Mustangs!
