Mustang Girls Tennis Battles at Sectionals - Season Comes to a Close
In an emotional day, the girls varsity tennis team's season came to a close at the sectional tournament. Competing in arguably the toughest sectional in the state with powerhouses Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township and Hinsdale South, the Mustangs battled, but did not qualify any players for the state tournament. The match of the day was between DGS doubles team of Gerda Jucys (Fr, 30-9) and Abby Davenport (Sr, 23-16) and a strong Lyons Township doubles team in the qualifying round. In a grueling 2+ hour match, DGS came up just short losing 6-4, 1-6, 3-6 bringing the Mustang season to a close. It was a historic season for the Mustangs who had a season full of peak performances including a 1st place finish of 16 teams in the Bloomington Purple Invite (first time in program history), a second place finish of 8 in the Champaign Doubles Invite, the best finish in 10 years in the stacked home 16 Team Mustang Invite (7th place), and a sweep of 1st place at every position in the Conference Tournament, a feat done once in program history, boys or girls, back in the 1993 girls season. DGS will graduate 8 including their 4 senior captains, Abby Davenport, Anna Buie, Kristiana Radakovic and Barbara Collins, as well as seniors Cece Divis, Brianna Perez, Bella Perez, and Nicole Fanella. Still, a young nucleus of 4 of 6 players from their sectional top 6 remain including freshmen Gerda Jucys and Jillian Urgello (29-10), and junior doubles team of Lizzie Andonova (27-12) and Alisha Macas (27-12). Strong senior leadership will be missed as pivotal players graduate, and returners look to equal and better the results of this extremely successful year. Overall, it was a GREAT season to be a Mustang!!!
