Girls Varsity Tennis Dominates, Earns 1st Place of 16 in Bloomington

What a day for the varsity girls tennis team at DGS!  The Mustangs competed in the Bloomington Purple Invitational against 15 other teams including top competition St. Charles North, Jacobs, and Belleville West.  The word of the day for the Mustangs today was consistency.  It was an amazing morning of tennis for DGS as between the five positions playing, the first 12 matches on the day were victories.  All 5 positions won their first 2 matches in the morning to make it to the semi-finals.  Of note in the morning was the play of one doubles team Abby Davenport (Sr, 6-8) and Anna Buie (Sr, 5-6) who grinded through 2 tough matches to get to the semi finals of a stacked draw of solid doubles teams.  Davenport and Buie would go on to earn 4th of 16 teams on the day.  Singles players Gerda Jucys (Fr, 11-3) and Jillian Urgello (Fr, 10-4) were dominant in the morning winning their first two matches handily.  The semi-finals were the round the Mustangs found themselves in many battles.  Jucys grinded through a difficult semi-final against last year's 1A state 3rd place finisher from University High School to advance to the finals.  Urgello breezed through her semi.  In their match of the day, 2nd doubles team Lizzie Andonova (Jr, 8-6) and Alisha Macas (Jr, 8-6) battled back after splitting sets to handily win a supertiebreaker to earn a place in the finals.  3rd doubles team of Kristiana Radakovic (Sr, 5-5) and Cece Divis (Sr, 7-5) dropped a tight semi final match.  Their highlight of the day came in the form of a great second set comeback in the 3rd place match against St. Charles North.  After closing the gap and winning the second set, Radakovic and Divis were dominant in the super tiebreaker to earn a 3rd place finish.  The Mustangs found themselves playing in 3 finals.  At 2nd doubles, Macas and Andonova were outmatched, but content with a great 2nd place finish on the day.  In the longest match of the day, Jucys faced off with Mossman of St. Anthony who won 3 rounds at the 1A state last year.  The match was up and down and emotionally draining as play waged on for close to 3 hours.  Unfortunately, Jucys dropped the match 7-6, 3-6, 3-6, but a 2nd place finish at the 1st singles position was critical to the Mustangs success today.  To cap off the incredible day, Urgello played awesome winning a tight finals match 6-4, 7-6 to win the 2nd singles draw.  The Mustangs team performance resulted in a total of 34 points with the next closest team, St. Charles North, earning 25 points.  It was a dominant and rewarding day for the Mustangs who have been putting in endless hard work and consistently squaring off against top teams in the state.  The Mustangs will ride the recent string of success into this week with 3 dual matches on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday against Willowbrook, Carl Sandburg and Morton.  It was an INCREDIBLE day to be a Mustang!!
