Mustang Girls Tennis Battle Top Competition at Home 8 Team Invite
The varsity girls Mustang tennis team competed in their first weekend tournament of the year this past Saturday 8/26 in their home 8 Team Invitational earning a 4th place finish. The day included 3 long grueling matches for DGS against Hersey HS, Glenbard West, and Naperville North. In the first round, the Mustangs faced a great Hersey HS team of the Mid Suburban League. Up and down the lineup the Mustangs quickly realized that nothing was going to be given to them for free and they were going to have to earn every point against Hersey HS. A theme that will continue for the coming years for DGS tennis was exceptional singles play at the 1 and 2 spots by freshmen Gerda Jucys (3-1) and Jillian Urgello (2-2). Both earned straight set victories with this being Urgello's match of the day in a tough 6-3, 6-4 victory where she made great adjustments and showed composure in a gritty win. In the 3 doubles matches, the Mustangs found themselves down in all 3 first sets early (1-4, 4-5, and 1-4). The Mustangs stayed composed and played solid doubles coming back to win all 3 first sets and cruised to victories at all 3 positions from there solidifying an impressive 5-0 victory over a very good Hersey HS. Of note, Abby Davenport (Sr, 2-2) and Alisha Macas (Jr, 2-2) played great doubles at the 1st doubles position in their comeback victory. In the second match of the day, the Mustangs battled last year's 4th place finishers at the state tournament, Glenbard West. Glenbard West had too much firepower for the Mustangs to handle, but DGS showed great determination dragging out and pushing the Hilltoppers to close sets. Especially close was the 2nd doubles team of Lizzie Andonova (Jr, 2-2) and Macas who handled the Hilltoppers pace and fought back in a tough close 6-4, 6-4 loss. The Hilltoppers went on the win the invite handily in the finals. The Mustangs played for 3rd place against the Naperville North Huskies in the last match of the day. The Huskies ball-striking abilities put DGS on the ropes taking the 2nd singles and top 2 doubles positions. At the 3rd doubles position, Barbara Collins (Sr, 1-3) and Brianna Perez (Sr, 0-3) had a great 1st set comeback despite dropping the closest match of the dual 7-6(5), 6-4. In the match of the day, freshman Gerda Jucys picked apart the Huskies top player in a convincing 6-1, 6-0 rout showing everyone watching the great things that are to come for Mustang tennis. Despite the tight loss to the Huskies, the Mustangs are confident and ready to make waves this year in the coming duals and weekend tournaments. Come support your Mustangs next weekend at home in our 16 team invitational against the top competition in the state. It was a GREAT day to be a Mustang!!
