Strong Start for Mustang Tennis against Top Competition

The varsity girls Mustang tennis team opened their first week of match play with 4 tough matches.  They opened their season with a strong 6-1 win over crosstown rival Downers Grove North.  Dominant play from 1st singles/doubles and 2nd singles from Gerda Jucys, Jillian Urgello, Alisha Macas and Lizzie Andonova got the Mustangs off to a strong start.  The other 4 matches were close, but the match resulted in first varsity victories for freshman Chrissa Dimitrakakos, junior Mimi Despotovic, and seniors Renee Renaud and Sam Perkins.  This weekend, the Mustangs played 3 matches against Rockford Boylan, Naperville North and Glenbard West in a stacked field for their home 8 team invite.  A strong start to the day included first varsity victories for seniors Merit Allendorfer and Aubrey Vernon as the Mustangs blanked Rockford Boylan 5-0 to make the semifinals.  Mustangs competed up and down the lineup with close matches at every position against an extremely talented Naperville North team that went on to be tourney champions.  Jillian Urgello posted a strong win at the 1st singles position as DGS and NN put their strongest teams possible at the 1st doubles position.  Gerda Jucys and Alisha Macas competed hard, but lost a close 6-4, 7-5 doubles match to a very tough team of the Zhang sisters.  Also of note was Lizzie Andonova and Mimi Despotovic's match at 2nd doubles where they were points from beating Naperville North's 2nd doubles team, but lost in a super tiebreaker.  Lastly, the Mustangs kept their spirits high and battled for 3rd place with last year's tourney champ and top 10 ranked Glenbard West.  Alisha Macas and Lizzie Andonova shined at 1st doubles against one of the top teams in the state but came up short.  Still, the match showed the amount of improvement the team has made in the past year to compete so well against the highest level of competition.  A similar story to the matches was evident in singles play as Gerda Jucys dropped a long exciting match to Sienna Lopez (2x all stater) and Jillian Urgello lost 10-8 in a super tiebreaker to a strong senior 2nd singles player for Glenbard West.  The Mustangs embraced the toughest of competition and are excited to continue another week of battles with OPRF at home on Tuesday as well as their home 16 team invite this weekend that has many of the state's powerhouses in the field of teams.  It was a GREAT week to be a Mustang!
