Tennis Takes Down Hornets

In the West Suburban Gold Conference, it is well known that year after year varsity boys tennis is a two horse race between the Mustangs and Hornets.  The Mustangs always circle that conference match with the Hornets as the one that is special as it's outcome typically is a determining factor of who will win the conference title.  Entering the match, the Mustangs are the youngest they've been in a long time and the Hornets are arguably the strongest up and down the lineup they've been.  The young Mustangs did not back down against an experienced Hornets team as the Mustangs clawed their way to a 4-3 victory.  DGS relied on their senior leadership of captain Lawrence Hiquiana to lead them to victory through his clinching win at 1 singles.  Hiquiana was resilient and kept his nose in front the entire match looking the part of the best most experienced player on the tennis courts.  The other 3 victories for the Mustangs came in the doubles where the Mustangs showed their depth winning at the 2, 3, and 4 doubles positions.  Matt Garcia (So) and Nolan Orth (Jr) showed great poise winning 7-5, 7-5 over a team that beat the Mustangs in last year's dual.  In the most dominant performance of the day, Jon Maghirang (Jr) and Tanuj Singh (Fr) stepped into big shoes and won 6-4, 6-4 over a tough 3rd doubles opponent.  Lastly, at 4 doubles, the unlikely pairing of the experienced senior JJ Urgello and the freshmen newcomer Mike Wronkiewicz bounced back after a 3-6 first set to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3 to earn the Mustangs the victory.  Mitch Ludewig (So), Matt La Rue (Jr), Eric Herstowski (Jr) and Nick Raso (Jr) all competed hard on the day as well.  Especially of note was Mitch Ludewig's marathon match at 3 singles which he battled, but lost, 7-6, 7-6.  It was an exciting day for the Mustangs who moved to 8-5 on the year.  The Mustangs continue their conference matches with Addison Trail at home on Thursday as well as home matches Friday against Moline and the DGS 16 Team Tournament Saturday.  Come support your Mustangs!  IT WAS A GREAT DAY TO BE A MUSTANG!!
