Hiquiana Qualifies for Boys State Tennis Meet

This weekend the DGS boys tennis team competed at their sectional tournament.  2 victories by a singles player or doubles team on Friday would earn them a top 4 finish and a state tournament bid.  Qualfying for the state meet is a huge accomplishment in this area as the sectional tournament contains great teams outside of DGS like Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township, Hinsdale South, DGN, and York.  From all these teams, just 4 singles players and 4 doubles team earn a trip to the state meet.  The Mustangs found themselves in 3 state qualifying matches through 1st round match wins by Lawrence Hiquiana (Sr, 31-10), Mitch Ludewig (So, 26-10), and doubles team Jon Maghirang (Jr, 24-11) and JJ Urgello (Sr, 26-14).  Ludewig and doubles team Maghirang and Urgello fought, but fell to 1 and 2 seeds of their respective draws.  Hiquiana entered the tournament the 3rd seed and found himself facing Hinsdale Central's 2nd singles player in his qualifying match.  Hiquiana made quick work of the HC opponent winning 6-2, 6-0 to earn his way back to the state meet.  Hiquiana continued play today battling Lyons Township's top singles player, the 2 seed in the singles field.  Lawrence lost the first set, but came back and was ahead in the second set when he tweaked his back outstretched for a backhand slice.  He fought through the pain, but lost the close match and defaulted from playing the 3rd place match to recover for the state meet this upcoming week.  Lawrence was an all-state finisher as a doubles player for DGS as a freshman and sophomore.  Now, returning to the state meet as a senior in the singles field for the first time, Hiquiana will be one of 64 singles players competing this upcoming Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 5/25-5/27.  The Mustangs finished 4th place in the sectional behind Hinsdale Central, Lyons Township and Hinsdale South.  It was a GREAT weekend to be a Mustang!
