Baseball Season Preview

Dundee-Crown Chargers Coach: Matt Mueller (first year)

Conference: Fox Valley

2016 record: 16-16, 8-9 FVC Valley

Top returning players: Seniors Brett Buske (P/IF/OF), Ryan Denz (IF), Sean Jay (IF), Jon Mays (C/OF), Conor Ryan (P/1B), Greg Williams (OF), Scott Wojcik (P/IF/OF); Junior Erik Hedmark (P/OF)

Top newcomers: Juniors Zach Hahn (C/IF), Jackson Prigge (IF), Jack Waldron (P/IF)

Season outlook: New coach Matt Mueller inherits 12 returning seniors and a junior pitching ace from a team that went 16-16 last year against a tough schedule. Heading the rotation is junior right-hander Erik Hedmark. He finished his sophomore season with a team-leading 2.13 ERA in 42.2 innings, struck out 44 and walked 8. Senior Conor Ryan is next in line and the staff has "lots of pitching depth after them." Mueller said. To finish in the upper echelon of a very deep Fox Valley Conference, D-C must improve at the plate. The Chargers batted .264 and hit one home run last season. Mueller is hoping for big seasons from senior infielders Sean Jay (. 286, 17 runs), Ryan Denz (10 RBI) and senior outfielder Greg Williams (. 764 OPS). "Our lineup is talented from top to bottom," Mueller said, "and we focused our off-season training on adding power to it."
