Softball: Dundee-Crown tops Marian Central behind 9-run 6th inning

CARPENTERSVILLE – There were only two seniors in the Dundee-Crown softball team's starting lineup during its 16-3 nonconference victory over Marian Central on Wednesday, and those players were slotted in the eighth and ninth spots in the batting order.

It would be easy to assume that means the Chargers lack experience. But that assumption would be completely wrong.

Sophomore leadoff hitter Hannah Gestrich, who was 2 for 5 with a double, triple and an RBI, started as a freshman. As did junior No. 2 hitter Deanna Origer, who went 2 for 4 with a double, RBI, walk and three runs.

The Chargers' No. 3 hitter, junior Andrea Conway, had a three-hit afternoon and drove in five runs, which included her first homer of the season. This is her third year as a varsity starter.

Junior cleanup hitter Claire Weeks (2 for 5), who had a bases-clearing three-RBI double in a nine-run top of the sixth, also is in her third season as a starter.
