Lady Lions Soccer stays Undefeated in Conference with 5-1 over Coal City
The Lady Lions Soccer team traveled to Coal City for their next Interstate 8 match up. Coal City played a very high pressure/up tempo defense which took a little while for the Lions to solve. But they did solve it for 5 goals, en route to a 5 - 1 conference win.
The first goal was scored in the 17th minute, when Sr. Calli Tomko, sent a field changing pass toward Jr. Josie Brenigar. Josie out raced her Coal City defender to get to the 50/50 ball first. The CC keeper had made a few steps toward the ball, but then tried to retreat to her goal, but it was too late and Josie launched a 25 yard shot over her head to the far corner of the goal giving Lisle the 1 - 0 lead.
CC responded in the 23rd minute when an errant Lisle goal kick and kicked ball was intercepted by a CC forward. Our defense didn't close down well and we allowed a shot from just inside the 18. Fr. keeper Grace Hoscheidt got her hands on the ball, but couldn't contain it and it went into the goal. The game was tied 1 to 1.
3 minutes later Soph. Alexa Fasone was taken down in the penalty area, as she was about to shoot and a PK was awarded to the Lions, Calli nailed it past the diving keeper and it put the Lions back on top for good.
As with all their games so far, the Lions don't slow up as the half is coming to an end and they scored goal number 3 off a corner kick. With just 2:30 to go in the half, Jr. Frankie Wagoner sent an awesome kick to the middle of the 18. Calli was there to get a leg on it and the ball skirted over to Alexa. Alexa she was able to push the ball past a couple CC defenders and the Goalkeeper to give the Lions a 3 - 1 lead at the half.
The Lions played a strong 2nd half but were unable to cash in on several good scoring opportunities for the first 20 minutes. But Calli got the 4th goal in the 62nd minute. Josie centered up a ball from the deep right corner to Calli. Calli settled it, took a dribble past a rushing defender and blasted a low shot to the far post. That made it 4 to 1.
The final goal was scored in the 79th minute, by Jr. Corrie Hutchison. Corrie got to a centered pass from Jr. Renee Esposito and hit a hard shot past the CC keeper. That made the final score 5 to 1.
After playing a sloppy first half, the defense picked things up. Our back line defenders, Jr. Frankie Wagoner, Jr. Michelle Osagie, Jr. Sophie Osborn, Soph. Katie Romo and Fr. Hana Kinney limited CC to one shot on goal. They allowed the offense to spend most of the time in the CC half of the field.
The next game is Saturday versus Stillman Valley at Wilde field, starting at 11:00.
