BOYS BASEBALL | Varsity

(New Lenox) – Providence Catholic High School’s varsity Celtic baseball team earned their third consecutive IHSA Class 4A State Championship Title on June 11, 2016 at Silver Cross Field in Joliet.  The Celtics came from behind defeating Mundelein 10-3  This marks 30 state championship titles for the Celtics; the most among private high schools in the state of Illinois.

“It is humbling to realize that we are the first large school in the state to ever 3-peat.  The confidence and perseverance these guys put into every practice and every game paid off; I am proud of these players and honored to be their coach,” said Mark Smith ‘88, PCHS Head Baseball Coach.

Providence Catholic Baseball Program

Providence Catholic Baseball is recognized as one of Illinois’ top baseball programs.  The Celtics compete in one of the top baseball conferences in the country, the Chicago Catholic League.  We have had numerous players move on to play collegiately as well as professionally.  We offer baseball at three levels:  freshman A&B, sophomore, and varsity.

Tom Dedin Field

The Providence Catholic baseball team plays on one of the finest facilities in the state of Illinois.  Renovated in 2008, Tom Dedin Field has become a premier location for exciting Celtic Baseball!   Some of the highlights of Tom Dedin Fied include a cedar wood outfield fence, professional style “in ground” dugouts made of brick with a heater installed into the varsity dugout as well as a 3 foot brick wall backstop with netting.  The press box is located on the 2nd floor of the home dugout.  Inside the press box is a media area as well as a coach’s office and a locker room for the Celtic baseball players.  20 foot foul poles stand on each foul line.  New to Tom Dedin Field is a 9-inning scoreboard with a color message board that gives Tom Dedin Field an even more professional look and in the fall of 2011 the infield dirt was given a red infield mix.  New to Tom Dedin Field is bleachers which wrap around home plate and comfortably seats 486 fans and is ADA approved.

Future plans for Tom Dedin field include lighting Tom Dedin field to host night games.

Tom Dedin Field also flourishes due to the irrigation system that covers the entire field.  This system keeps our grass green, healthy, and beautiful throughout the year.

Four batting cages are located down the left field line for players to get batting practice at any time.

Tom Dedin Field also benefits from a full infield tarp which allows us to play even after the most inclement weather.

Tom Dedin field is 330’ feet down each line, 340’ in the alleys and 350’ to center field.

Press Box

Providence Baseball is fortunate to get plenty of media coverage throughout the year.  The press box gives media plenty of space for any web cast, sportswriters, radio broadcasters, and photographers.

Members of the baseball team and coaching staff have a secure and spacious area to prepare and dress for all home games.  The locker room is accessible from the home dugout with each varsity player getting a professional style open faced locker with name plate.  The locker room is also furnished with a TV/video area.  A coach’s office is located on the first floor of the press box located behind the dugout.  This press box gives our players a “professional” feeling for game days and practices.

The Next Level

The Celtics have had much success on the field and in the classroom.  Many of our players have earned both athletic and academic scholarships.  In the past 10 years Providence Catholic Baseball Players have moved on to such colleges and universities as Indiana, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, St. Joseph College, Notre Dame, South Suburban College, Quincy, Joliet Junior College, Chicago State, St. Leo, Northern Illinois, Rose Holman, Bellarmine, Illinois Wesleyan, St. Francis, Benedictine, MonMouth, St. Ambrose, Robert Morris, Upper Iowa, Bradley, Iowa Central CC, St. Xavier, Carthage, Upper Iowa, Ball State, Southeast Missouri State, Washington U at Missouri, Benedictine, Tennessee-Martin, Kent State, Triton College and Northwestern. In Coach Smith’s 12 seasons 84 players have moved on to play college baseball.
