Great news form tennis land as the Jv boys captured the Wheaton South Doubles Invite. That is back to back titles in two weeks. "They are showing their talent and I hope they continue to work hard and keep rainsing the bar."
The Varsity Warriors finsihed fourth out of sixteen teams for only the second time in the history of the Downers South Invite led by standout first singles player Anthony Nguyen and some clutch wins by his teammates. "This is a team tournament and it showed this year as we won two first round matches by a tight 3-2 margin and got wins from different spots in those two wins to propel us to the top four." The Warriors started off the day with Chaminade from St. Louis in the tournament for the first and got clutch wins from Nazir/Satpalkar at 2 doubles and Huff/Ahuja at 3 doubles to get the win. On to the second round with always tough Jacobs. Anthony Nguyen started the Warriors off with a dominating 1 and 1 victory at 1 singles." He is getting better and better as the weather gets better. His confidence is growing and he is starting to believe in himself. Only Anthony can stop himself. He has such a powerful offensive game that he can overwhelm an opponent quickly or he can also play down to the competition. His mental toughness is going to be the deciding factor as he gets towards his goal of the state torunament." The other two points came from 1 doubles Sridhar/Holyoak who were down big in the first set and then turned it on by thier movement winning 5 and 2. Then the deciding point came in a fantastic match at 2 doubles where Nazir/Satpalkar came back from a first set defeat 6-3 and on 7-5 and then 10-8 in the third set. "This is where we have lacked the toughness earlier in the year to pull out a tight match and these two boys got after it and fought to the end. It would have been easy to fold the tent after the first set but they hung in there and battled. This should be a great platform for them moving forward." Now the Warriors were pushed into the top four which played at Downers Grove South. The excellent field there pitted WV against rival Benet while the other match pitted state power Glenbrook South against conference foe Naperville Central. The Warriors were beaten by Benet 4-1 with their lone win coming at first singles Nguyen. In the third place match the Warriors found themselves over matched by Glenbrook South and also lost 4-1. The big win came at first singles to complete a sweep for Anthony as he bested his opponent 3 and 6. "Anthony proved today that he is there with the big boys and can compete. I really liked his transition to the net in this match. We are trying to emphasize his athleticism around the net area to have another weapon to throw at his opponents. I want to thank all of our players for their efforts this weekend and look for renewed enthusiasm this week as we head to Wheaton South on Tuesday."
