Downers Grove Invite results"

The Warriors finished 11th out of 16 this weekend at the Downers Grove Invite. As a team we went 2-2 and led by one singles Hannah Owens who went 4-0 and now boasts an overall record of 9-1. Angelica Alvarez went 2-1 at at number two singles showing much more consistency in her strokes. We struggled in our first match in doubles with Lincoln Way East and lost all of the points yet showed better strategy. "We need to up the speed on our second serves due to teams really going on offense against our servers along with stop hitting to the opponent at the net. I was impressed in the first round in a match that had no berring on the score where April Kochman and Natalie Freitag played Crystal Lake Central and demonstrated a lot of situations that we practice. I am looking for progression this year. Kids who are will to compete and show that what we are working on in practice carries over into the match play." In the second round we be Crystal Lake Central 4-1 with a little shake up in our doubles lineup and Uma Kothuri and Megan Wright won a tough fought 7-5,7-5 match. Moving over to a new venue at Neuqua Valley we matched up against an always atheletic and tough York. Owens was the lone winner at one singles winning 2 and 2. The interesting match at two doubles with Kayla Hess and Isabele Panicker went the distance before we lost in a tie breaker 7-5,4-6,13-11. Here we had two match points and just got a bit tight. "These girls need to be in these situations to see how they react to close match play.I was impressed with the way we competed." The last match of the day saw Downers Grove North go down in a tough 3-2 loss to our Warriors. Playing without Kayla Hess and Isabele Panicker the Warriors were still able to get the win. Both singles girls Alvarez and Owens did their job in quick wins over their opponents. First doubles was a close 5 and 5 loss along with Freitag and Kochman moving up a spot to two doubles. Tied 2-2 the third doubles team of lone senior Shristi Paul and Carrington Patterson pulled off a first set tie breaker 7-4 and then cruised to a 6-3 victory in set 2 giving the Warriors a much needed win 3-2. "All in all over the four match span I was able to assess the abilities of all of the players and pinpoint our weaknesses which will be addressed starting 7 am on Monday. The effort in practice has been good but we need to transfer our practice habits and situations to match play." The Warriors are back in play at home against conference foe Glenbard North on Tuesday.
