Girls Swim and Dive 2020 City Champs

Huge Congratulations go out to the Girls’ Swimming & Diving Team, which ends its 2020 regular season as undefeated back-to-back City Champions! It came down to the wire in the meet against a very strong Whitney Young team, but in the end WY was no match for the depth of talent built and trained by Coaches Lance Grossman and Jim Cortez! RESULTS HERE.

The team started off with a strong performance by diver Olimpia Kacouris and then took off from there.  Junior Maddie Zehr led the team with her record-breaking wins in the 200 IM (2:10.28, breaking a Whitney Young pool record) and the 100 Breast (1:05.34, best in the City, breaking a longstanding Lane Tech school record), sophomore Meghan Mansfield blew away the competition in the 500 Free with a best-in-the City time of 5:25.07, and sophomore Jannie Esperon took home first place in the 50 Free with a season’s best 25:00.

The Varsity City win was built off a day full of great swims and dropped time, including sophomore Chloe Symons’ come-from-behind second place finish in the 100 Butterfly (1:01.04, dropping over 5 seconds), with 3rd and 4th for Cece Joshi and Morgan Rummelhoff; sophomore Staja Szukala’s second-best in the City 200 Free (1:56.66); a sweep of 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the backstroke for S. Szukala, Andrea Esperon and J. Esperon; and 2nd and 3rd place in the 100 Free for S. Szukala and M. Zehr.

The Junior Varsity swimmers represented Lane proudly, with top times from sophomores Emery Himes and Ella Grzeca (200 Free); freshman Emma Goldstein and senior Lydia Glenn (200 IM); seniors Dayna Izaguirre and Sarah Palmentera-Reid (50 Free); Lily Novosel and E. Goldstein (100 Fly); Sarah Palmentera-Reid and E. Himes (100 Free); sophomore Megan Woelfl and freshman Delaney Kirk (500 Free); L. Novosel and Sofie Gottschall (100 Back) and D. Izaguirre and sophomore Tara Keating (100 Breast).
