Lane Tech Cheer Team Takes Second Place at City

CORLISS HS- The Lane Tech cheer team took second place at the city championship meet this past Sunday.

The Lane Tech cheer team put up a good fight but lost first place to Kenwood High School.  The team had a strong overall performance with powerful tumbling and solid elite stunts. Although the team had been hitting their pyramid consistently during practices, it ended up being the weakest part of their routine at the competition.  A flyer fell out of the pyramid, resulting in a one point deduction for the team.

Coming off the mat, the team had mixed emotions.  They felt excited because they had hit the majority of their routine, but were also frustrated with the error in their pyramid.  Overall the team is really proud of their performance. They defeated their biggest competitors, Whitney Young High School and Taft High School.  The team also scored the highest raw score in their division.

The team had one breakout star at the competition, freshman Niamh Dillion.  Niamh tried out for the team in November with no prior cheer experience and was made an alternate. Three days before the competition one of the team’s flyers fractured her foot and was not able to cheer so Niamh took her spot.  She stepped up to the challenge, hitting everything she put out on the floor.

The Lane Tech Cheer Team will be competing again on January 24 at Hoffman Estates and again on February 1 at the IHSA Sectionals competition.
