Cross Country @ Granite City Invitational 9/5/20

The Granite City Cross Country Invitational is one of the most competitive and largest races in Southern Illinois; the 2020 version did not disappoint even in a pandemic.  Dividing the usual single large race into 1A, 2A, and 3A heats, then combining results, the Father McGivney Catholic High School Griffins competed well in their first large meet challenge of the fall.

The Lady Griffins had their best finish ever in Father McGivney cross country history; 4th in 1A and 13th out of all three classes.  It was even more difficult due to COVID guidelines; the Griffins were in the "1A second wave", and had to start the race in a group 5 minutes after the original gun.  Running largely on their own and outdistancing their own wave, sophomore Alyssa Terhaar ran 21:27, only 1 second off her career PR, racing to 10th in 1A/46th overall in an excellent race.  Freshman Kaitlyn Hatley (14th 1A) 22:01, and Emma Martinez (21st 1A) 22:39 both ran personal bests for 3 miles.  Claire Stanhous ran a personal best 23:51, and Amelia Beltramea ran 25:58 to round out the top-5 scoring for the ladies.  Izzy Margarida was 44th in the 1A race.  There were 139 total runners.
The 1A Griffins next race is back at Granite City next Wednesday (9/9/20) for a 5-team meet with 2A Highland, 2A Triad, 2A Mascoutah, and host 3A Granite City.  Varsity and JV will race.
