Girls Cross Country Season Concludes at Sectionals
History was made!! The Lady Griffins qualified for the first time in school history for the IHSA Cross Country Sectional, and finished 11th overall. The Griffins finished 12th in the boy's race (its 4th straight State Sectional qualification!) Temperatures were great for racing, but the 15-20 mph winds took its toll on times.
The Lady Griffins were once again led by freshman Kaitleyn Hatley in 22nd place; 2 spots from State-bound; 9th individual not attached to a qualifying team. Battling sickness since mid-week, Kailtyn ran a strong race, succumbing to fatigue late in the race. Sophomore Alyssa Terhaar ran a strong season finale; 46th in 20:47. Alyssa took a huge jump this year in racing; she didn't let the wind affect her effort. Sophomores Claire Stanhaus and Emma Martinez were 90th (23:03) and 94th (23:20). Junior Amelia ran a strong #5 for the Ladies, running 24:40 for 102nd. Senior Izzy Margarida was 112th, and jr. Ava Tidball 115th. Sophomores Sofia Luna, and Abbey Piechocinski also ran varsity, with Naomi Thiems junior varsity this season. With only one senior in its top 7, the girls have great potential next year. Expectations are high; preparation is key to achieving.
The cross country program was assisted by Russ Hart and Craig Brummer; Jim Helton was head coach. We were fortunate to be able to run in the IHSA State Series, even though it ended just short of State Finals at Detweiller Park in Peoria. We want to "thank" our parents, administration, supports, and local media who followed our team.
