Game Summary

Cross Country Regionals

The FMCHS Lady Griffins concluded their season by finishing 10th with 277 points.  Alyssa Terhaar ran 22:21, one place from Sectional Qualification.  Emma Martinez was 24:18 (50th), Amelia Beltremea 24:43 in 59th, senior Bridget Weeks ran excellent race in 25:47, Izzy Margarida was 75th, and Caroline Foppe 80th.  The cold, windy and rainy conditions made for difficulty in racing.

The Running Griffins scored 68 points in their first team Regional title, breaking Freeburg’s streak of seven straight championships.  Tyler Guthrie won the individual championship with an excellent tactical race in 16:00; he controlled it from the gun.  Zach Brasel (3rd) in 16:29, and Brandon Ahring (5th) in 16:38 were also medalists.  Zach “stuck his nose in it” early, with Brandon catching 3 runners in the last 100 yards; all three did what they set out to do....only 9 points out of our top-3!  Tanner Fox finished 21st in 17:44 with a very solid effort.  Frosh Nolan Shearer ran a tremendous last half of the race to score as our fifth man in 18:27/38th.  Noah Beltremea was 40th, and Evan Rybak 60th (out of 106).  The course was difficult/slow due to the cold rain, mud, standing water, and wind...our boy’s squad did an excellent job of “racing” (i.e. beating people) vs. concerned about the elements.  Excellent mindset for all.

The IHSA 1A Benton Sectional is next Saturday 11/2/19.  The Griffins go back to work; they will fire the gun again next week with State Qualification on the line!  Can the Griffins make it two-in-a-row?
