Lauren Knight Earns MVP Honor
Providence junior Lauren Knight had a career first when she was chosen the MVP of the Beecher Fall Classic.
The 5-7 guard poured in 95 points over five games, including 25 points in a 76-66 victory over Bradley-Bourbonnais in the championship game.
Knight took it in stride, according to Celtics coach Eileen Copenhaver.
“Lauren was very low-key,” Copenhaver said. “She probably knew it was between her and (teammate) Ryann Ogarek.”
Ogarek and Knight are running in tandem at the top of team’s scoring list. Ogarek, a senior guard, is averaging 17.4 points, while Knight is at 16.4 points for Providence (6-2).
Knight has had more opportunities to score with the emergence of junior Claire McGrath. The duo share duties as the point guard, where last season Knight was the sole playmaker. Knight is taking advantage of her shooting opportunities.
“Lauren likes to compete,” Copenhaver said. “She’s not afraid to take a long shot. She does things off the move. She drives.
“With two point guards, she can play a little more (shooting) guard. She’s doing a nice job.”
