Conquerors Make History!

The Varsity soccer team had a chance to make SCS history on Friday by being the first boys team to win an IHSA Regional Championship. The boys took down Mooseheart in the Regional Semifinal game on Tuesday. It was now Friday night under the lights at Hinckley Big Rock vs Aurora Christian for the Regional Championship.

The first half was controlled by the Conquerors with several dangerous crosses by Tim Mayer into the box, but nobody was able to connect to get a shot on goal. The Eagles of Aurora Christian had a couple of attacks, but no shots on goal. With around 10 minutes left in the first half Tim made another great cross into the middle and this time Peter Tulumbuta did connect on the ball with a shot that was blocked by the hands one of the Eagles defenders, which was immediately called a penalty. Jordan Epps, the leading scorer for the Conquerors took care of business on the PK by driving his shot past the keeper to give the Conquerors the 1-0 lead. The Conquerors went into the half with a 1-0 lead.

Coach White praised the team on their control of the game, but reminded them that a 1-0 lead was a dangerous one. Coach White challenged the team to come out in the second half and continue to be consistent defensively, which would lead to quality opportunities offensively.

The Conquerors listened to their coach and came out with high energy to start the second half. Two minutes into the second half Ben Lee sent a through ball to Tim in the left corner which drew out the Eagles sweeper and allowed Tim to send a ball to Jordan in the middle. Jordan ripped a shot off the cross bar, but followed it up himself and shot the ball passed the keeper to give SCS the 2-0 lead. The goal gave the Conquerors more momentum and confidence to start the second half and it also got the large SCS student and parent section louder! The Conquerors were not done scoring. Ben Lee got in on the goals with a powerful strike from outside the box into the upper corner of the goal. Nathaniel Bedford and Tim Mayer connected on a beautful cross and gave SCS a 4-0 lead. Coach White was able to get in the subs, giving them the experience of playing in a Championship game! Freshman Peter Tulumbuta and Sam Allchin came up big as subs throughout the game. Peter brought energy in several different positions giving the starters some rest, and Sam with his speed and length was able to have several offensive runs down the sidelines.

As the final seconds came off the clock the team and fans mobbed seniors Juan Monroy and Chris Townsel and the celebration was in full effect! Coach White was very proud with how the team played against a solid Aurora Christian team and was so happy for his seniors who had worked so hard to get to this point!

The Conquerors will now head to Oregon, Illinois to take on Oregon High School on Wednesday, October 23rd at 4pm for the IHSA Sectional Semifinal. Winner of the Semifinal will play for the Sectional Championship on Friday at Oregon at 4pm.

Huge thanks to all the fans that made the trip out to Hinckley Big Rock to bring energy and encouragement to the team! The Conquerors look to continue their solid play as they head into Sectionals.
