GIRLS RUGBY - GIRLS | Varsity
The Sycamore High School Rugby Club was formed and played its first season in 2004. In 2010 the Club rose to become the Tier II State Champ, defeating St. Rita in a close match, after several preceding successful seasons. The club currently fields more than 40 players from freshmen to senior level. Matches are played usually on Wednesdays, beginning in early April and concluding with the annual Illinois Youth Rugby Association State Championships in Lamont on Memorial Day. There are over 40 clubs in the IYRA at this time, with more added each season (rugby football is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the USA). Many of the players from SHS Rugby Club have gone on to play at university, for town clubs and on select touring sides, with travel overseas. In 2011, a new middle school program was started to compete in the IYRA middle school division, with a good representation of players from Sycamore Middle School out for their first season. The Club emphasizes team work, dedication to training and recognition of the “rugby family” bond that unites all players, coaches and administrators across the globe wherever rugby football is played. Rugby football returns as an Olympic sport in 2016. We hope that our alumni will go on to enjoy many years of active participation in the sport wherever they may end up. Everyone plays and everyone is encouraged to help with fundraising (the Club is self supporting), including running a successful Spring Tournament at Sycamore Park on the first Sunday in May, and manning sales at the Pork Shank Shack at Pumpkin fest.
