BOYS Golf | Varsity

Welcome to the BOYS' GOLF VARSITY page. Here you will find the latest information on this organization.

INTRODUCTION and GREETING

Incoming—and Returning—Golfers and Parents,

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome both players and parents to the boys’ golf program.  Although the season does not ‘officially’ begin until August 9th, we would like to begin preparation for our season on July 5th — IHSA allows 25 contact days with the players during the offseason. We have both our skills camp at Whisper Creek and weight training at the high school BEFORE the first official tryout date. Please read on for more pertinent information.

SUMMER CAMP DATES

WHERE: Whisper Creek

WHEN: July 5th – July 8th AND July 12th – July 15th

TIME: 9 – 11AM EACH day.

SUMMER CONDITIONING

WHERE: Central High School Weight Room

WHEN: July 19th – July 22nd AND July 26th – 29th

TIME: 9:30 – 10:30AM

TRYOUT DATES:

WHERE: Whisper Creek

WHEN: August 9th – August 12th

  • Monday: range and short game.
  • Tuesday: range, short game, and 9 holes.
  • Wednesday: range and short game.
  • Thursday: range, short game, and 9 holes.

GETTING READY TO PLAY—one of the greatest golfers of all time coined the following insight: “Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course—the distance between your ears” (Jones). Work on the three C’s of golf: Confidence, Concentration, and Composure (Article from the Left Rough).

  • Master YOUR Grip: emphasis and onus on YOUR. Whether it’s a weak, neutral, or strong grip, discover the one that works best for the player’s swing and player’s game.

  • 100 Swings a Day: Hank Haney posits that 100 swings a day for any level will produce dramatic improvement: swing speed, flexibility, tempo. Listen to music and spend fifteen minutes swing a club every day this summer!

  • Range Sessions: at some point it’s time to hit some balls. Work with the 37 rule. If a player cannot perform a task at least 3/10 times, it’s too hard… simplify it. If a player consistently performs 7/10 or better, it’s too easy… up the ante.

  • Short Game Only Sessions: never can be overstated, the vast majority of golf is short game. 75% is 100 yards and in, so spend 2/3 of practice time on wedges, chipping, and putting. For some of us, 50% of all strokes will be putting. The better the short game, the quicker the strokes fall off and averages WILL lower.

  • 10 Round Goal—anywhere but preferably Whisper Creek: ideally, student athletes will not be teeing it up for the first time at tryouts. Wonderful opportunity-- Youth On Course.orgafter an initial $30 sign-up, youth golfers can play courses for just $5. Yes, that includes Whisper Creek.

  • Conference Course Challenge: in order to both best prepare for quality and golf and succeed during the season, I suggest a mini tour of conference courses. Get a foursome together or drag mom/dad to the course and play. While a few courses are private, the vast majority are available to the public: Pinecrest GC (Huntley HS), Turnberry GC (Prairie Ridge), Foxford Hills GC (Cary-Grove), Randall Oaks GC (Hampshire and Jacobs), Bonnie Dundee GC (Dundee-Crown), RedTail GC (Crystal Lake Central), McHenry CC (McHenry), and Crystal Lake CC (Crystal Lake South).

  • IJGA: almost without exception, the best high school players participate in TOURNAMENT golf. I would suggest all student-athletes begin playing a few tournaments a summer if only for the experience. The more seasoned player will benefit from a more rigorous tournament schedule. IJGA 2021 Schedule.
