DECATUR MINI INVITE

Maroons take Second at Decatur

The Central Maroons competed in the Decatur invite held at the 2021 Sectional site, Hickory Point Golf course in Forsyth in arguably the best use of a golf course.  The Maroons treated this meet as a workout rather than a competitive experience sticking to their usual training routine rather than using the day prior to run a pre-meet workout.  Still, the harriers of Champaign high performed well at the meet taking second as a team with 72 points.

At the mile mark the Maroons had a solid front pack comprised of Maaike Niekerk(10th. 20:37), Allison Hobson(12th, 20:48), Jaylee Elsts(18th, 21:23), and Maria Buzing(19th, 21:27) separated by a mere four seconds, the spread widened a bit to 26 seconds at two miles but held strong at 50 seconds at the end of the race.  Ellie Kim(23:25) and Anna Sweet(23:26) made up the first chase pair running astride each other for the whole race finishing in 31st and 32nd respectively.

Rayleigh Law(24:32), Gwen Ellis(25:29), Darwyn Sly(25:29), and Izzy Buldak(25:52) were together at the mile with all four crossing in 8:03.  Law pulled away during the second mile while the other three remained proverbially attached at the hip crossing the two mile together.  Ellis(55th) and Sly(57th) continued their trend from last season running in tandem to the finish with Buldak coming in shortly behind in 61st.

Lauren Matthews(67th, 26:51), Zoe Lindgren(74th, 28:27), Caroline Bequette(77th, 29:27), and Zoe Surles(80th, 29:48) all ended up stuck in the proverbial no man’s land between teammates but appeared to have felt the connection regardless as each posted very strong final miles to bring the team effort to a strong close.

Top ten list performances including Maaike Nierkerk securing the #3 spot on the senior list and #9 spot on the overall list, Allison Hobson securing a tie for the #5 spot on the junior list, and Jaylee Elsts securing the #10 spot on the sophomore list.  The Maroons return to competition this Saturday in Alhambra, IL at the Highland Invite.
