ETHS Athletic Mission Statement
The core mission of ETHS Athletics is to develop young men and women into hard-working, self-reliant, confident, and selfless leaders and citizens. All student-athletes will represent and support ETHS with class, sportsmanship, humility and passion as they strive towards excellence in academics, athletics and life.
The ETHS Athletic Department strives for an innovative and successful athletic program. ETHS pursues excellence and equity in all of its programs. Athletics, as an integral part of the overall educational process, is uniquely positioned to enhance a well-rounded ETHS education. All ETHS coaches share the same goal as the school and Evanston community: to transform and improve the lives of all students.
The ETHS Athletic Department supports a broad range of high school teams that encourage our student-athletes to develop their skills and character to their full potential. We focus on building character through examples and experiences of leadership, persistence, competition, sportsmanship, teamwork and integrity. ETHS believes that successful teams serve to build a sense of spirit and camaraderie at school and are a source of pride for our alumni and community. ETHS’s commitment extends equally to all athletic activities for female and male sports. We encourage student-athletes to participate in multiple sports and other extracurricular activities.
ETHS prepares student-athletes to face a rapidly changing world with confidence and a sense of responsibility to make the world a better place. Our student-athletes will be better prepared for success in college and their future careers. The Athletic Department views its interactions with students as opportunities to help them discover, develop and test their skills and character to create positive change. We will support and motivate all student-athletes to remain engaged in athletics and connected to ETHS. Through the pursuit of healthy habits and participation in competitive high school athletics, ETHS student-athletes embrace the level of commitment necessary to achieve their individual goals, aware of the need to bring out the best in others, successful on the field of play and in the classroom.
ETHS expects that the young men and women who participate in our athletic program will be prepared to excel, contribute, and lead in their communities and beyond.
ETHS Athletic Department “Core Values” Statement
In order to achieve our mission, ETHS coaches and student-athletes are guided by core values:
Effort: We are “EXTRA” athletes, not “empty” or “even.” We work very hard and practice to develop our skills and talents. Extra effort impacts our success. We dive for loose balls, run the extra lap, finish faster than the required time.
Selflessness: We work collaboratively and in a cooperative spirit whereby the goals of our team come before the interests of any individual. We respect our teammates and coaches and benefit from everyone’s unique strengths and talents. We look for opportunities to give back to our community.
Self Reliant: We are accountable and take responsibility for our actions. We appreciate the guidance of our teachers, coaches and family, but recognize that we must get things done on our own.
Passion: We will enjoy and have fun in our athletic pursuits. We will emphasize pride & passion for ALL ETHS sports and activities with positive school spirit throughout our time at ETHS and when we return as Alumni.
Character: We recognize we are role models and represent our coaches, our families, ETHS and the entire Evanston community wherever we go and whatever we do. Honesty, integrity, trust, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, humility and loyalty are not just words to us. They are the values and core beliefs we live every day. We do the right thing when nobody is looking.
Leadership: We set a positive example in the classroom, on the athletic fields and in our community. We lead by example and know the right way to hold our teammates accountable for their actions and efforts.
Skill: We focus in practice to learn the skills, technique, strategy and game plan required for success in our sport. We are committed to learning and training outside of our season, but also recognize the importance of multiple sport participation on our overall development.
Academics: Our number one priority is our work and effort in the classroom. We realize our participation in athletics is a privilege and not an entitlement.
Excellence: Excellence is defined as doing our very best in the areas that we control with no regrets on the effort, attitude and teamwork required to achieve the goals we set for ourselves.
