Salinas claims tourney title at 170 pounds

Ricardo Salinas captured first place in the 170-pound bracket and led Evanston's wrestlers to an 8th place team finish Saturday at the Ed Ewoldt Invitational tournament at Wheaton Warrenville South.

The injury-depleted Wildkits only fielded entries in 6 weight classes but still managed to score 94 points as a team. Lyons Township claimed the team title with 224.5 points.

Salinas' title came via injury forfeit when Waubonsie Valley's Antonio Torres couldn't compete in the finals. Salinas boosted his season record to 26-1 overall with falls against Will Rising of Wheaton Warrenville South (5:39) and Chris Czopek of Oak Lawn (1:00).

Sophomore Anthony Joyner added a fourth place finish at 160, losing a 7-4 decision to Andrew Schodrof of Lyons in the 3rd place match to earn a 2-2 record at the tourney. Fifth place finishers for ETHS were Nathan Straus at 152 and heavyweight Valerie Jean-Jacques.
