Bolingbrook buries Kit girls in season cage opener

Evanston girls basketball coach Brittanny Johnson knew before the season started there would be nights like this.

But Tuesday’s 60-32 season-opening loss at Bolingbrook left the veteran coach disappointed in just one important category.

“The one thing I’m disappointed with is that I don’t think we competed tonight,” Johnson said.  “I always tell people that I don’t care about the wins and losses, I look at how we’re competing --- and we didn’t compete tonight.”

Evanston couldn’t find a competitive edge right from the start, falling behind 11-3 after the first quarter and 34-15 by halftime. The Wildkits committed 16 turnovers in the first half and only shot 25 percent (6-of-25) from the field.

Bolingbrook led 55-21 after three quarters.

“I think this is exactly what this team needed to see,” said Johnson about an opponent performing at an elite level. “When we’ve had young teams here in the past, we played the biggest and the best because that’s the only way to get them to understand what it takes.

“We were not ready tonight. I think there was a shock factor for us, playing in this environment, and we never really recovered from that shock.”

Sophomore guard Zuri Ransom led the Wildkits with 10 points, after sitting out much of the first half with foul trouble. Ciara Gentle contributed 8 points and 6 rebounds.

Evanston plays its home opener on Thursday against Lincoln Park.
