Boys & Girls Cross Country 2019
1. School Rules/Code of Conduct:
Follow all the school rules according to the Evergreen Park Student-Parent Handbook.
Please pay close attention to the EP Student-Parent Handbook and the Co – Curricular Handbook.
2. Attendance Policy:
We will practice every day, Monday through Friday promptly starting at 3:25 and typically ending at 5:30. All athletes are required to attend practices from start to end. In addition, we may have meets or practices on Saturdays which are also mandatory for those asked to attend.
When the school day ends, please visit your locker quickly, report to the locker room, change for practice and be ready to begin practice promptly at 3:25. If there is any reason that you may be late (meeting with a teacher, making up missed assignments, or other school related activities,) please get a pass from the teacher you are visiting so that we can know where you were. Being on time is crucial; consistent tardiness will result in consequences and/or loss of privileges. We will meet by the flag pole in the south football endzone for practice, regardless if we travel or not.
If you anticipate missing a practice or are going to be late, COMMUNICATE DIRECTLY WITH A COACH VIA A REMIND MESSAGE (info on second to last page.) DO NOT INFORM A TEAMMATE TO TELL A COACH FOR YOU!
You are allowed three excused and two unexcused absences throughout the season. Any absences beyond these can result in dismissal from the team.
Excused absences consist of documented (with doctor’s note) doctor visits, family emergencies, or funerals/wakes.
Unexcused absences consist of vacations, family outings, basically anything not described as an excused absence.
School must come first! You are in school to be a student, not a professional athlete.
You must be passing a minimum of 3/4 academic classes weekly to compete. Once a week, your teachers will indicate whether you are passing or failing their class. If you are not passing 3/4 academic classes, you will not compete for one week. However, you are still expected to attend practice.
Wherever you are as a member of the Evergreen Park Cross Country team, you are representing yourself, the coaches, the team, the school and the community. It is vital that you behave in a way that demonstrates a sense of maturity and responsibility wherever you are.
A balanced diet and plenty of rest is a must and will be a tremendous aide to you as you attempt to reach your goals this season.
Athletes are expected to get 8 hours of sleep a night.
No pop/drinks with excessive sugar throughout the entire season.
No fast food during the school week.
Staying hydrated throughout the school day and at practice.Bring a water bottle to school and practice.
6. Asthma or other Health Conditions:
If you have asthma, you are required to have your inhaler with you at all times.
If you do not have your inhaler, you will not be able to practice or compete.
Athletes must ask a coach to visit the trainer unless there is an emergency situation.
We will be pushing our bodies to their limits during many practices and meets and you will get sore. Athletes need to learn the difference between soreness and regular aches and pains and a true injury. Any and all injuries should be reported to a coach immediately. It is important to NOT make it a habit to bow out of practices to see a trainer as you will be missing valuable practice time that will be essential to you improving your performances. If a situation does arrive where an athlete needs to see the trainer daily for pre-workout aide, the athlete should do so quickly prior to the start of practice. If there is a long wait, the athlete should report to practice and then get clearance from a coach to return to the trainer for aide.
8. Running Aides:
Personal music players are illegal for many of the meets and can cause an athlete to be disqualified.
One of the greatest parts of being a member of a team is the friendships that you will make. Throughout the entire practice you should be talking with your teammates. Music players will NOT be allowed at practice.
9. Cell Phones:
Cell phones are prohibited during practice. At meets, once athletes are in their one hour race window, cell phones are prohibited until after the race.
10. Practice Attire:
Please dress appropriately for practice.
Practice attire consists of gym shoes, running shorts, and a watch. Shirts that expose the stomach are inappropriate. Tank tops or t-shirts are acceptable.
Demonstrate your team pride by wearing clothing that identifies you as a member of the Evergreen Park Cross Country Team
Each member of the team will be issued a school uniform including shorts, shirt and warm-ups. In an effort to keep these uniforms in good condition, they are only to be worn on meet days. Please remember you are representing EP and dress accordingly. It is each athlete’s responsibility to return all issued equipment in the same condition as when issued. Lost or damaged equipment must be paid for at the replacement price.
12. Riding the Bus:
Athletes are expected to ride the bus to events and home from events.
We encourage our athletes to travel with us. However, there are rare instances when an athlete must leave an event early (a doctor’s appointment, a family engagement, a LOT of homework, etc.) In those instances, the coaches’ are to be given the form from the athletics office filled out from the parents stating that they will be driving their daughter home from the meet or practice. THIS FORM IS TO BE TURNED IN TO THE COACH THE DAY PRIOR TO THE EVENT. This is a school policy. When an athlete must leave an event early, she must come find us and show us that her parent(s) is/are present and must check out with us prior to leaving.
13. IHSA Rules:
The IHSA has determined:
You MAY NOT compete in your sport outside of your school during your season. This means that you MAY NOT PARTICIPATE IN ANY CROSS COUNTRY-TYPE OF EVENTS SUCH AS 5K’S DURING THE IHSA CROSS COUNTRY SEASON.
You must pass twenty hours of high school work per week. This means you must be passing four (3/4) classes. Each week your teachers will report on your progress. If you are in jeopardy of failing a class or are failing a class, you will not be allowed to compete but will be required to attend practice.
14. Varsity Letters:
A varsity letter is a sign of accomplishment and should be regarded as such.
We firmly believe that a varsity letter is an honor that needs to be earned. Therefore, to earn a varsity letter, athletes must compete at the varsity level for a minimum of ½ of the varsity contests.
